The audition to be a part of our 2017-2018 Performing Groups is right around the corner – May 16th!
Auditions are a critical part of any dancer’s life and we strive to make it an enjoyable experience for our young dancers. It is normal to be a little nervous, but the tips below will help you and your dancer have a successful placement!
- Know the age limits – P&G’s company auditions are open to dancers age 8 (by September 30) or older with at least two years of ballet training. No matter your experience or skill level, it is important that you wait for the right time for your dancer to audition to avoid disappointment. If you are older than 12 and have significant dance experience, you may also contact our office to arrange a placement class if transferring schools.
- Dress appropriately – Having the correct attire not only shows that you are well-prepared, it also puts your dancer at ease and makes her/him feel comfortable. For our auditions (and a good rule of thumb for most dance auditions), we require traditional ballet attire. This means pink tights, a solid leotard, and a ballet bun. Come ready for ballet class, but bring all shoes with you.
- Put your dancer at ease – Auditions can be very daunting for a young dancer, especially if it is their first time. As a dance parent, it is helpful to remain calm and not add any additional pressure to the event. Phrases such as “I am so proud of you for working so hard toward your goals” and “Just be yourself and treat this like any normal dance class” can make a huge difference in your dancer’s experience. It is also important to arrive early enough to not be rushed, but not so early that your dancer has time to overthink.
- Relax – Everyone will be placed in a class that is best for your dancer based on age, experience, focus, and skill. Although you may want your child to be placed in the highest level possible, if you’re child is not prepared it can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed and contribute to frustrations toward dance class. Just relax, everything will work out exactly as it should!
